Daniel Jones needs more time
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones hasn’t even finished his first full season as a starter and it seems like a lot of people are ready to write him off and find a new signal-caller.
Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus is one person who doesn’t think Jones is good enough to be a franchise quarterback. So the question is, when will be know whether or not Jones is a bust?
Right now I believe it’s unfair to make any final decision on Jones’ future. For one thing, the Giants don’t have a choice, they have to start him. Benching him for Colt McCoy would make zero sense because he’s not going to help them win more games and Jones needs to battle through the tough games and learn and improve as a player.
I don’t think it was luck that Jones looked as good as a he did as a rookie. There is a chance that Jason Garrett’s offense doesn’t fit him as well as Pat Shurmur’s. Of course it’s hard to tell because it’s not like we got to see Jones play under Shurmur this season.
There is also the chance that NFL teams had enough film on Jones from last season to figure out how to slow him down.
I believe until we see how Jones performs in Garrett’s offense next season, it’s not a fair to judge whether he’s the answer at the quarterback position for the Giants. For all we know he could break out some time this season or in 2021.
