Bill Belichick involved in another controversy
New York Giants’ assistant defensive coach Bret Bielema was the University of Arkansas head coach from 2013-2017 and was dismissed under controversial circumstances.
There has been a dispute over the $12 million buyout that Bielema is owed from Arkansas because the New York Post wrote that he was supposed to “make reasonable efforts to find employment that would mitigate or offset the remaining buyout money owed to the coach.”
The problem is that New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick hired Bielema as an assistant and only paid him $125,000 a year from 2018-2019, which is a problem because it “was less than the minimum number to trigger a buyout reduction.” So of course Arkansas is still on the hook for the $12 million.
The Razorback Foundation claims Belichick conspired with Bielema — the coaches share an agent, Neil Cornrich — to ensure the latter received a low enough salary to ensure the full buyout amount, alleging Bielema made no effort to find a better paying job elsewhere. In Jan. 2019, the Foundation ceased the payment to Bielema, who was still owed $7 million. Bielema filed suit this June, with the Foundation filing a countersuit.
NY Post
It really looks like Belichick was trying to help Bielema collect the $12 million because he’s talented enough to get another head coaching job after being the head coach of Wisconsin from 2010-2012 and leading them to multiple Big Ten titles aside from being the head man at Arkansas. He could have very least gotten a coordinator job somewhere.
