I don’t understand the Daniel Jones hatred
We’re only nine weeks into quarterback Daniel Jones’ second season with the New York Giants. Not to mention this is his first full season as a starter in which there weren’t any offseason programs or a preseason to prepare for the actual regular season.
There’s no doubt that Jones hasn’t looked as good at times as he did as a rookie, but he’s displaying plenty of promise. So why are Giants’ fans so quick to want to move on from him already? Here are my thoughts below:
Wasn’t a sexy pick
A quarterback from Duke is not a very sexy draft pick especially when he’s taken with the sixth overall pick. Most people didn’t even know who Jones was. Unlike exciting draft picks like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson (more on them below), there wasn’t much hype for Jones and the expectations haven’t been very high within the Giants’ fan base.
This leads me to believe that with Jones not playing perfect right away, fans are ready to move on and get another quarterback.
Giants fans quickly forgot about Eli Manning
I’m not sure how New York fans have already forgotten how up and down Eli Manning played during his first few seasons. If he didn’t lead the Giants to a Super Bowl in 2007, fans would have been calling for him to be gone heading into 2008. Instead they worshipped him after beating Tom Brady and the Patriots in Super Bowl 42.
Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson effect
In this case Mahomes has been more of an immediate star than Jackson because Jackson wasn’t a great passer in his first season and still isn’t but he’s a league MVP and an exciting quarterback that plays great on a more consistent basis.
Fans need to realize that not every quarterback is going to be great right away. Some guys take more time to develop and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Fans also have to remember that players like Mahomes and Jackson have a much better supporting cast than Jones does right now. Even Manning had a great team around him when he was struggling early on in his career.
