Saquon Barkley will become a free agent very soon
One of the things that New York Giants’ owner John Mara touched on during his press conference on Wednesday was that he expects star running back Saquon Barkley to be with the organization for a very long time.
“I certainly expect him to be a Giant for a very long time,” said Mara when asked about Barkley.
Now nothing is set in stone when it comes to Barkley’s future because he is of course recovering from a torn ACL. I would imagine that the Giants want to see how he bounces back next season. If he can’t stay healthy in 2021 or doesn’t look like the same player, I don’t see them keeping Barkley.
Next season will be a big one for Barkley not only because he’ll be coming back from a serious injury, but it’s the final year of his rookie contract. So if he can’t prove that he’s the same play and that he can stay healthy I can’t see the Giants re-signing him.
This coming offseason the Giants could end up losing back-up running back Wayne Gallman who is scheduled to hit free agency. Do they keep him as insurance or let him want to draft someone else or sign a free agent to back up Barkley? So many tough decisions.
