Leonard Williams led the Giants’ pass rush in 2020
It’s obvious that the New York Giants desperately need to get an edge rusher this coming offseason, whether that’s through free agency or the NFL Draft. Guys like Leonard Williams picked up the slack, but it wasn’t enough.
The Giants did rank 12th in the NFL with 40 sacks in 2020. Just imagine if they had someone on the edge to provide consistent pressure.
Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus has released his 2020 NFL pass rushing rankings. The Giants came in at number 19. Here’s what Linsey wrote:
One of the more bizarre stats to come out of the 2020 regular season was that the Giants’ top four pressure marks all came from interior defensive linemen. Leonard Williams (62 pressures), Dexter Lawrence (29), Dalvin Tomlinson (28) and B.J. Hill (22) all produced more quarterback pressures than New York’s top mark from an edge defender — Kyler Fackrell with just 19.
The Giants will look to bring back Williams in free agency after a productive season, and it’s easy to see them looking to add an edge rusher, as well.
With Williams likely leaving via free agency and the fact that he accounted for a quarter of New York’s sack total in 2020, they will really need to add an edge rusher heading into next season.
