Offensive tackle in the first round isn’t a good move
It seems like most NFL mock drafts lately have the New York Giants taking Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
Well, Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports is going in a different direction and has the Giants taking Northwestern offensive tackle Reshawn Slater with the 11th overall pick. Here’s what he wrote:
Despite investments they’ve made in the offensive line, it continues to be a weakness after a season when QB Daniel Jones was sacked 45 times in 14 games. Slater was a guard in high school but played both tackle spots for the Wildcats and could settle in opposite 2020 first-rounder Andrew Thomas.
The Giants do need a right tackle, but rookie Matt Peart played very well on that side and they might get Nate Solder back next season so I’m not sure if using the 11th pick on an offensive tackle is wise.
Now, if the Giants want to go with an offensive lineman in the first round, especially a right tackle, grabbing one at 11 would be a mistake. They should instead trade down and take a right tackle.
