Devonta Smith would be ideal for the Giants
When it comes to the 2021 NFL Draft, my hope is that the New York Giants will be able to grab one of the top three wide receivers in the draft with the 11th overall pick. Because if they’re going to really have a chance to see if Daniel Jones is the quarterback of the future, they need to get him a number one receiver.
Many draft “experts” believes the Miami Dolphins will take Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith with the third overall pick and they believe the Giants could end up with his college teammate, Jaylen Waddle.
In Pro Football Focus’ latest mock draft, they actually have Smith slipping to the Giants because they have the Carolina Panthers trading up to the third pick to take Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. That would be ideal for New York. Here’s what Ben Linsey of PFF wrote:
The Giants likely went into the 2020 season feeling content with their offensive weapons and made no real moves to add to their receiving corps. It’s hard to imagine that being the case again in 2021, so Smith falling to 11th overall would be an ideal situation for New York.
Smith’s production has been off the charts over the last two years. He led all Alabama wide receivers — a group that included three other first-round talents — in receiving yardage in 2019 and is coming off an even better, Heisman-winning campaign this past season. From his releases to his ball skills, there is a lot to like with Smith, and he would give a much-needed injection of talent to the Giants’ offense.
I do believe Smith would be great for the Giants, but there is always the chance that Waddle could turn out to be the better NFL player. Whether it’s the two Alabama wide receivers or LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, the Giants need one of the three
