Saquon Barkley has been great for the Giants, but he can’t carry them
New York Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley has definitely lived up to expectations coming out of Penn State University, but his presence alone hasn’t been enough to help them make the playoffs.
Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus posted an article detailing the worst draft pick from every NFL team over the past five years and he has Barkley as the Giants biggest recent draft mistake. Here’s what he wrote:
NEW YORK GIANTS: RB AT NO. 2
Not really much of a debate here. Saquon has been pretty much as advertised, too. It just hasn’t moved the needle. The 2020 season made it fairly evident how much his play mattered to the win column.
As much as I like Barkley I think it might be a good idea for the Giants to think about trading him because he’s not going to be the difference between them making the playoffs and not making it. I can’t imagine that they would have won more games in 2020 with him on the field.
The only problem is that Barkley is coming off of ACL surgery, so I doubt many teams would be interested making a deal or even interested in giving up what the Giants will be looking for in return. Also he is one of New York’s key veteran leaders.
