Daniel Jones can still be great
It’s kind of eerie how similar the career of New York Giants’ starting quarterback Daniel Jones’ is to former Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning through his first two seasons and I’m not talking about stats. Let’s put those aside for now.
What I mean is that Jones hasn’t blown anyone away with his play because he’s been inconsistent for the most part. Which is actually normal for a young player and quarterback in this instance. People just want every top-10 pick to be great right away, but that’s not realistic, just look at Manning’s career.
Like early on in Manning’s career, people are ready to write off Jones. Even during the 2007 season when Eli led the Giants to a Super Bowl title, people were ready to get rid of him. But then New York went on their magical run to defeat the undefeated New England Patriots.
I think Manning’s career shows that you have to be patient with players as they develop, but the critics as well as some Giants fans seem to forget that.
One thing is for sure and that is that the Giants’ organization still believe in Jones. Jordan Raanan of ESPN says that they believe Jones can be one of the top signal-callers in the NFL.
Jones is their guy, multiple team and league sources reiterated to ESPN over the past few weeks. And while the organization’s brass, from the top down, believes Jones has what it takes to be a successful upper-echelon quarterback, they are knowingly taking this leap of faith with their fingers crossed after inconsistent results during his first two professional seasons.
I think Jones has shown enough potential to be great, but 2021 will be the season that he has to break out and it’s up to the Giants to get him the weapons he needs to do so.
