Saquon Barkley may not be worth re-signing
New York Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley is only 24 years-old and is heading into the final year of his rookie contract. With that being said, Big Blue shouldn’t be in a rush to sign him to a new deal.
With Barkley coming off of a torn ACL, the Giants need to be patient and see how he bounces back in 2021. Also they have to weigh whether or not it’s worth it to give him a big contract.
As talented as Barkley is, he hasn’t played a full season since his rookie year in 2018 and let’s be honest the Giants aren’t winning any more games with him in the backfield.
I ultimately believe the best move for New York would be to let Barkley play out his contract and use the money they would have used to extend his contract to continue to strengthen their roster at more pressing positions.
Right now, the Giants should re-sign Wayne Gallman as insurance for Barkley because he did a very good job filling in for the Pro Bowler in 2020. Then if they choose to let Barkley walk next offseason they could add another back in free agency or the draft.
