Kevin Zeitler isn’t worth keeping
News came out earlier in the week that the New York Giants are trying to trade starting offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler.
Now, the Giants likely won’t be able to trade Zeitler given the fact that teams around the NFL know they don’t have much cap space and will ultimately likely just release him.
Some people seem to feel like it would be foolish for the Giants to trade or release Zeitler, who accounts for $14.5 million in cap space for the 2021 NFL season. But don’t forget that his playing time was about cut in half last season when New York was rotating him in and out during games to give Shane Lemieux more playing time.
Pro Football Focus brought up a good point about Zeitler’s dip in production and it’s evident to me that he’s not as good as many people think and isn’t worth what his salary states.
You can’t tell me the Giants won’t be able to find a free agent that will be cheaper to sign that can produce a similar PFF grade. No matter how you spin it, paying Zeitler over $14 million is only going to hurt them next season.
The Giants would even be better off drafting a replacement and gambling with a rookie playing at the same level as Zeitler.
