Free agency will be here very soon
After giving up a 2020 third round pick and a 2021 fifth round pick in exchange for defensive lineman Leonard Williams in 2019, the New York Giants have made it clear that they want to make sure he sticks around.
Williams is scheduled to become a free agent on March 17th when free agency opens up, which is just over a week away.
The Giants and Williams tried to get a deal done last year, but weren’t able to do so, which brings us to 2021 where both sides are considered to be far apart as of a few weeks ago.
New York now has about 10 days to work something out before Williams will be able to test the open market and Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News says that the Giants have told him that they want him back.
The Giants want Leonard Williams back. They have told him that. He likes it in New York, too. They just have to make the money work.
It’s great that the Giants have told Williams that they want him back, but the fact of the matter is that both sides have to come to an agreement on a new contract. It doesn’t matter what anyone’s intentions are if something can’t get done.
The feeling I get is that the Giants will get a deal done closer to when free agency begins.
