Giants have so many options
After a free agent spending spree, the New York Giants can use the 2021 NFL Draft as way to beef up their depth and fill a few more holes on their roster.
Austin Gayle of Pro Football Focus has posted a two round mock draft and has the Giants taking Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith in the first round.
1st round (11th pick) – Alabama WR Devonta Smith
DeVonta Smith’s reported weight (170 pounds) shouldn’t keep the Giants from pulling the trigger on the Heisman Trophy winner if he falls into their laps at No. 11 overall. And while the team did just break the bank for former Detroit Lions receiver Kenny Golladay, Smith is an instant upgrade over Darius Slayton or Sterling Shepard — one who will benefit from playing a rotational role split between the outside and the slot.
Similar to Miami’s situation with Tua Tagovailoa, New York needs to do everything it can to see if Daniel Jones can be “the guy” for the franchise before making the decision to either move on from him or offer an extension. Adding Smith is a step in that direction.
The fact of the matter is that if Smith or his college teammate Jaylen Waddle are available at the 11th pick, the Giants would have to take one of them.
In the second round, Gayle has the Giants taking Alabama center Landon Dickerson, which might be a risk.
2nd round (42nd pick) – Alabama C Landon Dickerson
Dickerson is a heck of a player but was injury-prone in college after tearing his ACL during his freshman year at Florida State, missing nine games a sophomore due to an ankle injury and then tearing his ACL during the 2020 SEC title game.
The second round might be too high for Dickerson.
