Devontae Booker is a versatile player
People were quite surprised when the New York Giants decided to give free agent running back Devontae Booker a two-year $5.5 million contract.
During his press conference on Tuesday, Giants’ general manager Dave Gettleman made it clear why they wanted to add Booker.
“One of the reasons we prioritized Devontae is: You can never have too many good players, at any position. I don’t care what anybody says,” Gettleman said, via NJ.com. “One of the things that made Devontae so attractive was the fact that we felt he was a legitimate three-down running back. So it’s always a group decision here. Everything is in the best interest of the Giants. So we feel he can be a good part of our solution at running back.”
The other thing about Booker is that he can play special teams, whereas Wayne Gallman could only help the Giants on offense and in no other facets of the game. Which is likely why Gallman is looking for a new team right now.
Let’s just hope that the Giants get their moneys worth with Booker. They also need to look towards the future and select a running back late in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft to give him them some more depth and youth behind Barkley. Or at the very least sign a promising undrafted free agent at the position.
