Does Michael Strahan have a point?
New York Giants’ great and Super Bowl 42 champion Michael Strahan admits that he wouldn’t have the job that he has with “Good Morning America” right now if it wasn’t for Big Blue’s magical championship season in 2007.
“It would be different because winning is everything wherever you are, winning in New York City magnifies you 100 times,” Strahan said, while appearing on Kyle Brandt’s “10 Questions” podcast, via the NY Post.
“I think for me as far as being known and all those things, did it help? Yeah. But I’d been here long enough to know that being in New York 15 years and playing for this team already kind of solidified me in a lot of ways, but never with the words ‘champion.’ So having the word ‘champion,’ having people be able to say that with your name and have a ring behind it, I think just puts you in a national spotlight.”
“Winning in the Super Bowl was the first and only time that I was ever a guest on ‘Live with Regis and Kelly.’ And when I was on as a guest on ‘Live with Regis and Kelly,’ Regis asked me what I was gonna do next. And I said, ‘If you’re tired, or if you retire, maybe I’ll you know, take your job. It will be Kelly and Michael, Michael and Kelly.’ Not knowing that years later that’s exactly what would happen,” Strahan explained.
Strahan said he would have never been invited to come on “Live with Regis and Kelly” if the Giants didn’t win the Super Bowl
“I never would’ve been a guest on that show to even show them that I was somebody to invite back had we not won the Super Bowl. And being on that show led me to ‘GMA.’ So the answer is: Absolutely not,” he said.
I think Strahan makes a fair point about not getting the job if it wasn’t for the Giants’ magical season in 2007. But he has a great personality and comes across as a down to earth good person and that certainly helps as well.
Just look at former Giants’ running back Tiki Barber, while I know he didn’t win a Super Bowl, his TV career crashed and burned because he was full of himself and thought he could retire from football and become a star. Of course that never happened.
