Saquon Barkley is sticking around for at least another two years
We now know that running back Saquon Barkley will be with the New York Giants for at least the next two years after they picked up his fifth year option on Wednesday.
This now means that Barkley’s salary will be $7.2 million in 2022 and will be fully guaranteed. The good news is that Barkley’s salary in 2022 will have a lower cap hit than this coming season ($10 million).
I would imagine that by the time the 2023 offseason rolls around that the Giants will know by then whether or not they want to re-sign Barkley to a long-term extension. By that time, he will have had the chance to prove whether or not he can stay healthy. He will also be 26 years-old in 2023, around the time running backs start to decline.
No matter what, the Giants need to add another young back via the draft either this year or next year in case things don’t work out with Barkley.
