Was Cedric Jones that bad?
Like every NFL team over the years the New York Giants have whiffed on quite a few first round picks. One player in particular that comes to mind is former running back Ron Dayne.
Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report has written an article naming the biggest draft bust for every NFL team. When it comes to the Giants, he chose the number five overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft, defensive end Cedric Jones.
Here’s a portion of what Davenport wrote:
But what really makes this pick cringe-worthy is the options that were still there on the board at this spot. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison and linebacker Ray Lewis are already in Canton. Offensive tackle Willie Anderson may one day join them. Running back Eddie George and wideout Terry Glenn were both capable producers for years and Pro Bowlers.
Jones played his entire five year NFL career with the Giants and only recorded 15 sacks. His best season was 1999 when he had 7.5 sacks.
I was a teen when Jones was drafted by the Giants and remember him being highly touted out of the University of Oklahoma. It’s a shame things never worked out for him in the NFL.
