Giants were taking a receiver no matter in first round
Heading into the 2021 NFL Draft many people thought the New York Giants could go with a cornerback, offensive lineman or edge rusher aside from obviously targeting a wide receiver in the first round.
A day later and it’s pretty obvious that the Giants were keen on taking a wide receiver no matter what and of course they ended up with Florida’s Kadarius Toney. But if he wasn’t available they had another plan.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan says that the Giants would have taken University of Minnesota wide receiver Rashod Bateman at 20 if Toney wasn’t available.
After the Giants took Toney, Bateman fell to the Baltimore Ravens at 27, so he still ended up going in the first round. In total five wide receivers were taken in the first round, which isn’t a surprise given how deep this year’s class is.
I really like the Giants taking Toney because of how versatile he is and the different ways he can hurt opposing defenses.
