Giants add another edge rusher
The New York Giants have selected Northern Iowa edge rusher Elerson Smith with their fourth round pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
I mentioned earlier in the day that it would be ideal for the Giants to use their fourth round pick on an interior offensive lineman, but they clearly had Smith valued higher than any lineman still on their board.
Smith didn’t play in 2020 and only recorded one sack in total over the course of the 2018 and 2019 seasons in college.
The thing about the draft that fans have to remember is that it’s about the future and taking the best player for your team long-term. Teams look at free agency as a way to add depth and help them win right away more so than the draft.
If a rookie can come in and help a team win right away that is a bonus. We’ll have to wait and see if Smith can come in and earn some playing time with all of the players that the Giants have at outside linebacker now.
