Giants saved themselves some money last week
Not only did the New York Giants acquire a load of draft picks when they traded down from the 11th overall pick in the first round to the 20th overall pick, but the move will also save them some money.
As Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com points out, the Giants will save $940,000.
It amounts to an approximate $940,000 difference in cap space in 2020, and $5.1 million over the life of the initial four-year contract — and more if you factor in the fifth-year team option.
Here’s how much the Giants saved by trading back in the second round to select Georgia edge rusher Azeez Ojulari.
The Giants saved money in their second-round trade-back with the Miami Dolphins, too, going from No. 42 to No. 50, where they picked Georgia edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, projected predraft as a first-round pick. The Giants saved about $220,000 in cap space in 2021 in the trade and about $1.24 million over the life of the contract.
Now, when New York traded up in the third round for cornerback Aaron Robinson they lost $11,000, which isn’t too bad.
Rosenblatt posted the projected salaries for all of the Giants’ draft picks by using overthecap.com.
First (No. 20): WR Kadarius Toney. Four-year, $13.71 million deal (+ fifth-year option), $7.33 million signing bonus, $2.494 million 2021 cap hit.
Second (No. 50): EDGE Azeez Ojulari. Four-year $6.77 million deal, $2.28 signing bonus, $1.23 million 2021 cap hit.
Third (No. 71): CB Aaron Robinson. Four-year $5.14 million deal, $1.1 million signing bonus, $935,145 2021 cap hit.
Fourth (No. 116): EDGE Elerson Smith. Four-year $4.23 million deal, $758,292 signing bonus, $849,573 2021 cap hit.
Sixth (No. 196): RB Gary Brightwell. Four-year $3.65 million deal, $178,872 signing bonus, $704,718 2021 cap hit.
Sixth (No. 201): CB Rodarius Williams. Four-year $3.65 million deal, $173,136 signing bonus, $703,284 2021 cap hit.
With the Giants not having a whole lot of money left under the cap, approximately $5,040,201, saving money via the drat will definitely help.
