Kelvin Benjamin is a Giant, for now
It really didn’t sound like the New York Giants were going to sign free agent tight end Kelvin Benjamin, but they have.
Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News reported that Benjamin has been signed by Big Blue.
In order to make room for Benjamin and running back Corey Clement, who the Giants signed on Saturday, they waived running back Jordan Chunn and tight end Nate Wieting.
Even though Benjamin has been added to the Giants’ 90-man roster, it doesn’t guarantee that he will actually make their final 53-man roster for the upcoming season.
New York just added tight end Kyle Rudolph this offseason and also have Levine Toilolo, Evan Engram and Kaden Smith. So I’m guessing that if Benjamin wants to win a spot on the Giants’ roster he will likely have to beat out Smith and that isn’t going to be easy.
While Smith and Toilolo aren’t star players, they’re good enough to start and have more experience at the tight end position. Whereas Benjamin just moved to tight end after starting his NFL career as a receiver and falling off due to conditioning and injury problems.
