The NFL still doesn’t get it
It seems like the National Football League can never shake negativity when it comes to the news and they can only blame themselves.
ABC News reported on that the NFL’s concussion settlement with former players has made it difficult for some of those players to receive needed benefits because of “race-norming.” In case you don’t know what that is, here is an explanation:
The practice of adjusting test scores for race, widely known as “race-norming,” is in use across several different medical fields as a supposed safeguard against misdiagnosis. But because these “norms,” as used in a neuropsychology context, assume that the average Black player starts at a lower level of cognitive functioning than the average white player at the outset of their careers, Black players need to show larger cognitive declines than white players to qualify for compensation.
Of course this doesn’t help black players, but it helps the NFL save a lot of money due to the fact that the players in their league are mostly black. The league initially defended the settlement that they made with the players.
No the NFL has admitted that they were wrong after a judge ordered both sides into mediation in order to work out the issue at hand.
“We are committed to eliminating race-based norms in the program and more broadly in the neuropsychological community,” an NFL spokesperson said in a statement. “The parties to the settlement have been working with the magistrate judge and have assembled the leading members of the neuropsychological industry to help identify alternative testing techniques.”
“Everyone agrees race-based norms should be replaced, but no off-the-shelf alternative exists, and that’s why these experts are working to solve this decades-old issue,” the statement continued. “The replacement norms will be applied prospectively and retrospectively for those players who otherwise would have qualified for an award but for the application of race-based norms.”
It’s really a shame that a league like the NFL that makes the majority of their money because of the black athletes in their league refuse to help them after their careers by creating a system that keeps them from getting health benefits. How selfish can people be when they’re already raking in billions and billions of dollars off of television deals with networks like ESPN, FOX, NBC, CBS, DIRECTV and even Amazon Prime.
Not only do I hope the NFL fixes this problem, but I hope they will stop trying to screw players out of the care they need. Especially black players.
