Should the Giants add another offensive lineman?
With the New York Giants’ training camp expected to open in just over a month I think they’re just about done signing free agents after adding running back Corey Clement last month.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report wrote an article where he picked one free agent that every NFL team needs to sign. For the Giants he chose offensive lineman Trai Turner. Here’s a portion of what he wrote:
Jones was sacked an alarming 45 times and had 11 fumbles in 14 games last season.
While the Giants get offensive tackle Nate Solder back after he opted out of the 2020 season, they also parted with starting guard Kevin Zeitler. Free agent Trai Turner could replace Zeitler and, ideally, help improve Jones’ interior pass protection.
Turner was limited by injuries to nine games in 2020, but he is a five-time Pro Bowler and only 27 years old.
Adding Turner would require New York to free up cap space as it has only $4.9 million available. It would be worth it, however, as protecting and developing Jones must be the franchise’s No. 1 goal in 2021.
With the Giants not having the cap room to sign Turner, I’m not sure who they would release in order to create room. One name that has been floated around this offseason has been Will Hernandez, but they will likely need him to play left guard this coming season.
Also, releasing Hernandez won’t make their line stronger even if they add Turner because the moves would likely offset the talent on their line.
