Giants’ linebacker unit is getting better
Pro Football Focus has been ranking every position group within the NFL this offseason. Next up is the linebackers and when it comes to the New York Giants, they’re ranked 15th.
Sam Monson of PFF wrote the following:
15. NEW YORK GIANTS
Blake Martinez has racked up 109 defensive stops over the past two seasons, the third-most in the league. He is coming off the finest year of his career and the first in which he matched his best play in coverage with his best play against the run in the same season. However, the Giants don’t have much outside of Martinez, relying on journeyman run-stuffer Reggie Ragland alongside him.
Martinez is no doubt the heart and soul of New York’s linebacker unit. Hopefully they can find a suitable starter alongside of him in the middle. It will likely be Reggie Ragland that starts next to him.
Then of course you have the Giants’ outside linebackers, which haven’t been their biggest strength lately. Of course New York can only hope that second round pick Azeez Ojulari will turn into a star because they really need a pass rush on the outside.
The team listed with the top group of linebackers is the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL team with the worst group is the Green Bay Packers, according to Monson.
