Blake Martinez excited about this team
The New York Giants added a lot of talent to their defense this offseason after signing Adoree Jackson as a free agent and drafting edge rusher Azeez Ojulari in the second round.
One player who loves the way the Giants’ defense looks is starting middle linebacker Blake Martinez.
“I’ve been in the huddle calling the plays, I’m looking around, I’m like, ‘Wow! This is an awesome huddle right here!’ ” Martinez told The NY Post. “ ‘OK, this is gonna work out.’ It’s always good to have those feelings going into each and every year.”
Like a lot of the players on Big Blue’s defense, Martinez is confident that they will get the job done in 2021.
“For us, we think the sky’s the limit. Once that Sunday comes around at home with a full stadium, everyone’s gonna see, and it’s time for us to show-up-or-shut-up type of thing,” Martinez said.
One free agent that Martinez is excited to have is defensive tackle Danny Shelton, who will likely take over for Dalvin Tomlinson, who signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent. Shelton is a former first round pick that is large in size and will eat up blockers for Martinez to roam the middle of the defense.
“It’s just gonna make my job that much easier. I messed with the coaches saying that no wonder he was a first-rounder, ’cause he’s basically three guys in one, so basically with one pick you got three guys.”
The Giants are also getting Lorenzo Carter back from injury and added other linebackers like Ryan Anderson in free agency and Merlon Smith in the draft. They have the depth to help this team get to the playoffs.
