Preseason will be fun to watch
Just like every other NFL team, the New York Giants will have positions up for grabs this coming preseason once training camp opens on July 27th.
I’ve picked three underdog players on the Giants that have a chance to win a starting job heading into the regular season.
RG – Zach Fulton
Probably the most wide open position for the Giants is at right guard with Kevin Zeitler now gone after New York released him earlier in the offseason.
Big Blue did sign Zach Fulton this offseason to compete with possibly Will Hernandez and Shane Lemieux.
It looks like Lemieux will likely start at left guard, so the right side will come down to Hernandez and Fulton.
The 29 year-old Fulton has a lot of experience after playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and most recently the Houston Texans.
RT – Nate Solder
With Solder now back after taking a season off due to COVID-19, he will have to compete for the starting job at right tackle with second-year offensive lineman Matthew Peart.
With how well Peart played as a rookie, there’s no doubt that Solder is the underdog in this one. But a year off may have helped him heal up at the age of 33, so there is a chance he could win the starting job at right tackle.
DT – Austin Johnson
Now that Dalvin Tomlinson moved on in free agency, the Giants need to find his replacement. Right now I think the odds are in favor of Danny Shelton taking over at defensive tackle. But the Giants did re-sign Austin Johnson this offseason to a one-year, $3 million contract, which is a lot of money for him. So they clearly wanted to keep him and believe in him.
