Leonard Williams has to prove he’s worth the mega contract he signed this offseason
New York Giants’ defensive tackle Leonard Williams could be primed for another big season after racking up 11 sacks in 2020 and dominating opposing offensive lines.
The betting odds of Williams’ chances of winning Defensive Player of the Year for 2021 are now out and he has a 50/1 chance of winning the award. The favorite is Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns at 3/1 and Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams has 5/1 odds.
Williams signed a new contract this offseason that will pay him an average of $21 million per season. It’s a three-year, $63 million contract with $45 million guaranteed.
Despite getting paid some big money, the contract should keep Williams motivated because it expires in three years and he will only be 29 years-old when he hits free agency again. So he could get another big contract by 2024.
With the additions of Adoree Jackson, Azeez Ojulari and others on defense, I think it will only help free up Williams for another big season.
