Giants got James Bradberry for a bargain
One of the best signings that the New York Giants have made in recent memory was inking cornerback James Bradberry to a three-year, $43.5 million contract in 2020. He completely lived up to the billing while proving that he’s one of the top corners in the league last season.
Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus has ranked the top-32 contracts in the NFL and he has Bradberry’s deal at number 22.
22. CB JAMES BRADBERRY, NEW YORK GIANTS: THREE YEARS, $43.5 MILLION ($5.9 MILLION IN REMAINING GUARANTEES)
The New York Giants front office had to hit a home run in free agency in 2020, especially in addressing a porous secondary that had plagued them for a few years. The Giants’ wide cornerbacks ranked 30th in coverage grade in 2019, and 2019 first-round pick CB DeAndre Baker was released shortly before the 2020 campaign.
That ranking improved to 15th in 2020, largely due to the addition of Bradberry, who matched up on the outside with opposing teams’ top wideouts. Bradberry is a true lockdown No. 1 cornerback and is now the cornerstone of what could be one of the league’s best secondaries in 2021.
With Bradberry proving that the money the Giants spent on him last year was a great investment for their organization, newly acquiring cornerback Adoree Jackson will have to do the same this year by staying healthy and locking down the opposite side of the field as Bradberry.
What’s going to be interesting is to see how tight the Giants are against the 2022 NFL salary cap after all of the spending they did this year.
