Can Austin Johnson beat out Danny Shelton?
The New York Giants will be opening up their training camp in about a month as they get ready to prepare for the 2021 NFL Season.
I’ve been going through different position battles heading into training camp and another one to watch will be at defensive tackle.
With veteran Dalvin Tomlinson signing with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency, there will be two guys vying for his spot and that is Austin Johnson and Danny Shelton.
The 27 year-old Johnson is a New Jersey native and just signed a new contract with the Giants this offseason that will pay him $1.5 million for this coming season.
Johnson spent the 2016-19 seasons with the Tennessee Titans after being taken in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft. His first season with New York was in 2020 where he recorded 17 tackles, one sack and one pass defensed in a limited role.
When it comes to Shelton, the Giants signed him back in late March as a free agent. He’s also 27 years-old and was the 12th overall pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2015 NFL Draft out of the University of Washington. He was in Cleveland until 2017 and then signed with the New England Patriots and played with them from 2018-2019. He spent last season with the Detroit Lions.
When looking at both Shelton and Johnson, there’s no doubt in my mind that Shelton has the advantage heading into the preseason because of his massive size at 6’2″, 344 pounds and his experience as a starter. I think the only way Johnson wins the job is if Shelton gets injured during the preseason.
Now, Johnson could also surprise everyone and win the job by outplaying Shelton, but right now he’s certainly the underdog in this battle.
