Ray Handley was not head coaching material
Back in 1991, Ray Handley took over as the New York Giants’ head coach after Bill Parcells decided to step down.
Handley previously served as the Giants’ offensive backfield coach from 1984-1990 and was essentially promoted. Unfortunately his time as New York’s head coach only lasted two years after he went 8-8 in 1991 and 6-10 in 1992.
Barry Werner of List Wire created a list of the “20 worst coaching hires in NFL history” and Handley made the cut.
Some situations are more challenging to step into than others. Such was the situation the New York Giants found themselves in when Bill Parcells exited. Ray Handley wasn’t awful. He lasted two seasons and went 14-18. He just wasn’t the guy to be coaching a team in the Big Apple. After being let go following the 1992 season, Handley fell off the face of the earth.
There is no doubt that hiring Handley wasn’t the right move and I don’t doubt for one second that the Giants as an organization don’t regret the move. At least they quickly realized their mistake after two seasons and move on from him. After working for the Giants, he never coached again.
I’m not sure if Handley was the worst hire in NFL history, but he might be when it comes to the Giants’ franchise.
