Will Azeez Ojulari start right away?
The New York Giants reloaded their roster at the edge rusher position this offseason with the additions of rookies Elerson Smith and Azeez Ojulari. They also signed free agent like Ryan Anderson to go along with veterans Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines.
Now, we don’t know exactly where particular players will play as it pertains to the right side of the left side, but I’m going to touch on some training camp battles that will take place.
If the Giants didn’t draft Ojulari I would say that the front-runners to start on the outside would likely be Anderson and Ximines. But I’m going to go with Ojulari as one of my favorites to win a starting job because he’s likely their most talented outside linebacker. But other than him I think it will be a close race between Anderson, Carter and Ximines because they’ve all had similar production so far in their careers. The most sacks they’ve each had in a season is either four or 4.5 sacks.
Now, with Carter coming off of a ruptured Achilles, I think he’ll be a step behind Anderson and Ximines for the other edge starting spot. My prediction is that Ximines and Ojulari will end up being Big Blue’s starting outside edge rushers when they kick off the regular season.
When it comes to the other outside linebackers on the Giants’ roster like Niko Lalos, they can only hope to sure up a spot as a backup. Lalos in particular could be on the bubble.
