In the Next Reconciliation “Vote-A-Rama,” Republican Lawmakers Are Planning to Seek Votes on Immigration and Border Security

During the upcoming “vote-a-drama” that will be related to the budget reconciliation bill, Senate Republicans are planning to schedule several votes on amendments that are related to immigration and border security.

These moves could put pressure on Democrats who are running in competitive re-election races.

To get around the filibuster requirement of 60 votes in the Senate, Democrats are attempting to move a scaled-back version of their social spending bill through the budget reconciliation process, which requires only 50 votes to pass and can therefore be approved even without the support of Republicans.

Reforms to the way prescription drugs are paid for, significant new funding for environmental protection, an expansion of the coverage provided by the Affordable Care Act, and an increase in overall taxation, including for large corporations are all included in the plan.

The passage of this law is the culmination of more than a year’s worth of negotiations between Democrats aimed at getting past the Senate filibuster by using a mechanism known as budget reconciliation.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia, are the primary proponents of this legislation.

Manchin was instrumental in derailing the nearly $3 trillion “Build Back Better” proposals from the previous year. The legislators have given the new piece of legislation the name “Inflation Reduction Act” and have asserted that it will spend $433 billion while bringing in tax income of $739 billion.

The Republicans may have the option to add immigration and border amendments to the budget reconciliation bill if they participate in a vote-a-Rama.

However, utilising the reconciliation process implies that the bill is now available for a potentially endless amount of modifications, and Republican lawmakers intend to make use of this opportunity.

Amid a raging border crisis that has not abated one bit since it began in March of last year, Republicans utilised a vote-a-Rama in August to set up a series of difficult votes for moderate Democrats on immigration.

These votes included funding for border security and immigration enforcement within the interior of the country. A number of the initiatives garnered the approval of Democratic lawmakers.

According to a statement made by a Republican Senate staffer to Fox News Digital on Thursday, “several” amendments on matters relating to the border and immigration are now being prepared by different offices.

On Fox NationVideo, Griff Jenkins gives an excerpt from his upcoming film “Broken Border Crisis.”

In the meantime, Senator James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, announced to the press that he plans to propose an amendment to Title 42.

Title 42 is the public health order that has been used since March 2020 to expel the majority of migrants due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A federal judge has, up to this point, prevented the Biden administration from putting an end to the order, despite the government’s efforts to do so.

There have been calls from Republicans and even some Democrats for the order to be prolonged or even made permanent by the administration of Vice President Joe Biden.

The votes could force moderate Democrats, some of whom have expressed support for Title 42 and additional funding for border security measures, into a situation in which they break with others in their party and vote for the amendments backed by Republicans.

This would be a significant departure from the status quo within the Democratic Party. If this is the case, then there is a possibility that other Democrats will object to the amendments, which might result in the legislation’s complete demise.

It is because of this predicament that Senator Bob Menendez, a prominent immigration dove from New Jersey and a Democrat, has sounded the alarm for other Democrats.

This Thursday, he tweeted that the adoption of amendments that would “stop access to asylum or extend Trump’s border wall will not solve our broken immigration and will put reconciliation at risk.”

“Adoption of amendments that would end access to asylum or expand Trump’s border wall.” “We must defend immigrant communities against the ambitions of the GOP to use reconciliation to divide us and to further Trump’s racist and destructive policies towards immigration,” the statement reads.
