“I love writing this show and I’m so thrilled to be able to continue the Derry Girls story, thank you Channel 4, Erin, and the eejits live to fight another day!” says Lisa McGee, who is the writer of Derry Girls.
The actress who plays Michelle, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, explains that “Lisa has moved them all on slightly within their friendship circles, relationships, and maturity.”
Everything has been improved, albeit slightly. You witness things that they have never been forced to deal with before in such a comprehensive manner. There’s a great harmony between the girls growing up and the Derry Girls’ signature brand of insanity.”
Derry Girls Season 3 Release Date

Derry Girls Season 3 Plot
In a previous interview with the Belfast Telegraph, Nicola Coughlan revealed that the author Lisa McGee had discussed forthcoming plot points with her.
Coughlan was quoted as saying, “They are so brilliant, which does not surprise me.” She is simply incredible, but hearing her speak about it made me want to act immediately. On the other hand, we want to put on the most polished performance of the show that we possibly can.
Believe me when I say that if they told us we could go tomorrow, we would all be there no matter what it took to make it happen. “Come hell or high water, we all want to make it work.”
McGee also revealed to RadioTimes.com that the upcoming episodes will take place during a more upbeat time for the gang, as their hometown moves closer and closer to achieving peace and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. (where the writer suggested she would like to wrap things up).
During the month of April 2019, she was quoted as saying, “I’m just thinking about storylines at the moment. A political origin story is something I’d like to write. Even though it makes me nervous, I need to get into the habit of writing things down as soon as possible.
“We’ll continue from 1995, so obviously things were quite different for us back then. For one thing, all of these splinter organizations appeared out of nowhere, which was quite strange. Then, people were just getting used to the idea of living in peacetime.
I believe that they had more to lose than we did, and we didn’t want anything to go wrong with it because it was something that we all really wanted. It was something that no one dared to even think about happening, and when it did, everyone was terrified; therefore, the prospect of losing that is even more terrifying.

However, because of the commitments that Nicola Coughlan had to fulfill while filming Bridgerton during the pandemic, her role had to be reduced in the final episodes of the show.
“When writing the script for Derry Girls, we were forced to make some concessions. It was heartbreaking for me because I wanted to be a part of everything that was going on “Coughlan shared his thoughts with Belfast Live.
“But compromises had to be made. And as you probably know, they were forced to reduce my role, which was a challenge for me. Incredibly, horribly challenging. However, I have a feeling that you know, the viewers of the show are going to be pleased.”
