ChatGPT: Why schools worry about students using AI?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the tremendous development of online learning has highlighted questions about the role of technology in exam surveillance — and also in students cheating.

Some colleges have reported increased cheating during the pandemic, and similar concerns are emerging in an environment where technology that allows for writing automation continues to grow.

What Is ChatGPT?

The ability of artificial intelligence to generate text has advanced dramatically in the last two years, particularly with the invention of the language generator GPT-3. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and NVIDIA can now generate “human-like” writing using this technology.

The use of AI-generated writing has elevated the stakes for how colleges and schools will define academic misconduct, such as plagiarism. We feel that educators and parents should be paying close attention to these critical advances as scholars interested in academic integrity and the linkages of work, society, and educators’ labor.

Enter any prompt or question, and you’ll get an eloquently worded, (usually) accurate response.

Generative AI ChatGPT provides the limitless potential to find answers to any query you’ve ever had, but its development has also been faced with criticism.

A Queensland Department of Education representative stated it has stopped ChatGPT for children on the department’s network until it could be thoroughly “examined for suitability”.

Queensland has joined NSW in prohibiting the app from being used in public schools. Victoria has ruled down the possibility of blocking ChatGDPT.

ChatGPT, or Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, is a chatbot introduced in November 2022 by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research, and implementation organization. It is a language model capable of producing realistic, human-like text.

ChatGPT can be used for language translation as well as summarizing big sections of text to provide a summary of an article.

When prompted, it can also generate text responses on any subject, making it suitable as a customer support chatbot.

Why Do Schools Worry For Students?

During the COVID-19 epidemic, the tremendous development of online learning has highlighted questions about the role of technology in exam surveillance — and also in student cheating.

The main issue is that university and high school students could utilize ChatGPT to cheat on written assignments without getting caught. It’s been compared to pupils delegating their homework to robots.

However, some educators have spoken about using ChatGPT as a significant chance to make assessments more genuine, matching issues students may experience in the real world.

This would necessitate a dramatic rethinking of school and university assessments in order to make plagiarism far more difficult. In reaction to the debut of ChatGPT, an internet program capable of detecting artificial-intelligence-generated material, named AICheatCheck, has already surfaced.

Based on word choice and sentence structure, it employs its own artificial intelligence models to predict whether the content was authored by a human or a machine.
