19-year-old Sachin Hawkins, a native of New York with aspirations to become a special education teacher, was fatally stabbed by his 24-year-old flatmate, Syed Hussain-Kazi, while attending the University of Hull in England. The shocking occurrence has left the town in mourning.

Hunt for Justice
The alleged perpetrator, Hussain-Kazi, was apprehended on Thursday on suspicion of murder. Authorities revealed that he had fled the shared residence following the attack, prompting an extensive search that led to his capture.
Detective Chief Inspector Jayne Goodens stated, “This is thought to be an isolated incident between two people, believed to be known to each other, that took place inside a property. We do not believe there to be any wider risk to the public.”
Sachin Hawkins, a graduate of Freeport High School on Long Island, had moved to England in 2022 to pursue his studies at the University of Hull. His mother, speaking to NBC New York, shared the devastating loss of a son who had dreams of making a positive impact as a special education teacher.
“He wanted to make everyone proud and was a role model for the younger generation. Sachin was loved by everyone,” she said.

The bewildering nature of the incident has left family and friends grappling with unanswered questions. Hawkins’ mother revealed that her son and Hussain-Kazi were friends, and she had spoken to the roommate just days before the tragic event.
“What triggered it? That’s the question we’re all asking. Why Sachin?” she said. “None of his friends, his other friends, who were there, no one knows.”
As the investigation unfolds, the University of Hull community and the broader public are left mourning the loss of a promising young individual whose life was cut short in a seemingly senseless act.
The incident serves as a somber reminder of the unexpected tragedies that can unfold, even within the close bonds of friendship, leaving a community searching for answers and grappling with the impact of such a devastating loss.
