Stimulus check update: As states send more payments, some Americans may face penalties

Americans are suffering the agony of increasing costs at the grocery store, petrol stations, and in most other sectors, but others may soon face even more pain in the form of taxes owed on their prior stimulus check.

This is likely to be the case for California residents who got payouts valued at more than $600, as the California Franchise Tax Board announced it would disclose middle-class refunds valued at more than this threshold. Other states did not impose this requirement, therefore their inhabitants are not required to report the payments as income.

Why Some Americans May Face Additional Tax Penalty?

The simplest option for anyone who received a check in 2022 to see if they must report it is to check if they obtain a 1099-MISC form from the IRS. If the form is issued, the receiver must include the amount as miscellaneous income on his or her federal tax return.

Despite the tax penalty that may be incurred as a result of the payments, certain Californians may still get greater income.

According to KTLA, the Franchise Tax Board, the state agency responsible for distributing monies, has produced a pay schedule indicating that the final phase would conclude on January 14, suggesting that the final payments will be made between January 30 and February 14.

While inflation has begun to decline, prices for all types of everyday goods and food remain high, and while gas prices are nowhere near the peak they reached in June 2022, they are on the rise again, averaging $3.405 per gallon in the United States as of the 21st of January, according to a report by AAA. In California, the average price is $4,436.6.

Americans are suffering the agony of increasing costs at the grocery store, petrol station, and in most other sectors, but others may soon face even more pain in the form of taxes owed on their prior stimulus check.

Several states are ready to give residents direct cash to combat inflation. Here are the states whose inhabitants will receive stimulus check as early as this month.

California

Millions of Californians from the middle class should have already gotten checks of up to $1,050 via direct deposit or by mail in the form of debit cards.

The state anticipated that 95% of the payments will be made by the end of 2022. Nevertheless, a few payments were scheduled for January 15, 2023, so a few Californians may receive a little more cash this month.

Colorado

In 2022, Colorado distributed stimulus grants of up to $750 for individuals and up to $1,500 for couples filing jointly. Those who timely submitted their 2021 tax returns undoubtedly already received these stimulus payments.

However, there are still those who applied for a six-month tax filing extension and may not receive a Colorado stimulus check until late January.

Idaho

In March of 2022, Idaho sent out its initial batch of reimbursements. The state issued its second round of stimulus payments in September 2022.

The state is delivering the cash, $300 for single filers and $600 for married filers, to qualified residents based on when the state’s taxation department received their 2021 tax return.

The department of taxation in Idaho will favor direct deposit payments over paper checks.
As state residents file their tax returns during the duration of 2023, the money are still being handled.

New Jersey

New Jersey citizens are receiving stimulus funding in the form of property tax rebates. Homeowners with incomes up to $150,000 receive a reimbursement of $1,500, while those with incomes between $150,000 and $250,000 receive a rebate of $1,000.

If their income does not exceed $150,000, renters are also eligible for a $450 reimbursement. In the first several months of 2023, payments are scheduled.  They should be distributed to homeowners and tenants no later than May 2023.
