TikTok Under Fire: Creators Rally to #KeepTikTok Amid Ban Threat

Thousands of TikTok creators, worried about losing their livelihoods and online communities, are rallying behind the #KeepTikTok movement in response to a potential ban on the platform.

The popular app, boasting over a billion monthly users, is under fire due to a proposed bill that could force ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, to sell TikTok or face a ban from US app stores.

Facing Potential Ban

This has reignited the #KeepTikTok hashtag, which first emerged last year during Congressional hearings about national security concerns surrounding the app.

In a social media statement, TikTok urged creators to defend the platform. They encouraged users to share videos expressing the positive impact of TikTok and to lobby Congress against the ban.

JT Laybourne, a prominent TikTok creator with 1.7 million followers, exemplifies the anxieties many users face. He relies on the platform for his full-time income and community. “This is the app that feeds my family,” he stated, expressing frustration at the potential loss of his livelihood and the disparaging remarks from lawmakers towards the platform and its users.

Lawmakers Defend Bill, Claiming National Security Concerns

The bill, titled “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” aims to remove any social media app deemed a national security threat due to foreign ownership.

It has bipartisan support and is expected to be voted on by the House soon. President Biden has indicated he would sign the bill if passed.

If enacted, the bill would grant the president authority to ban apps deemed threats based on national security concerns. This includes apps controlled by entities in China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea. Banned apps could regain access only if they sever ties with the foreign adversary within six months.

Thousands of TikTok creators, worried about losing their livelihoods and online communities, are rallying behind the #KeepTikTok movement in response to a potential ban on the platform.

TikTok claims the bill effectively bans the app and denies millions of Americans their right to free expression. They argue it will harm businesses, artists, and creators.

Many creators argue lawmakers misunderstand TikTok and its impact. They emphasize the platform fosters global connections, empowers diverse voices, and provides financial opportunities for small businesses and artists.

Several tearful videos express the fear creators have of losing their income and online communities built on TikTok. Some, like Laybourne, rely almost entirely on the platform for their business.

Laybourne highlights instances where TikTok facilitated fundraising for charities and emotional support for struggling users. He cites his own experience where his community raised over $1 million after his heart surgery.

The creators criticize the dismissive attitude of lawmakers towards TikTok and its users. They feel the potential ban disregards the positive aspects of the platform and the value it provides to millions.
